AI comes to doctors’ fingertips

Accessibility is one of the major obstacles to the widespread adoption of new technologies, including AI. Before the release of ChatGPT, many AI experts have already observed similar capabilities in other language models previously. However, it was not until OpenAI released ChatGPT, with its simple and familiar user interface, that language models began to experience viral growth in the general public, not just within the AI community.
Similarly, if we want to revolutionize healthcare with AI, easy access and use by doctors will be critical. Recently, Nuance Communications, Inc., a Microsoft Company, announced the general availability of DAX Copilot, an AI-powered solution that automatically documents patient encounters, embedded in the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system, which had the largest hospital market share (>30% in 2022). This represents a major leap in utilizing AI to enhance healthcare delivery. Although doctors can use ChatGPT or Doximity GPT for similar work, integrating it within the Epic system greatly simplifies the process. Doctors can directly access it when using Epic to document patient encounters.
